Model United Nations/Debating

At St Leonards, Model United Nations/Debating connects pupils to a global network, fostering leadership and international engagement. Through debate and diplomacy, pupils address critical global issues, preparing to shape the future.

Global Engagement

Model United Nations/Debating at St Leonards extends beyond the classroom, connecting pupils to a global network of young leaders. As an international school, St Leonards is committed to helping pupils broaden their horizons and engage in meaningful debates on critical issues with peers from around the world.

MUN and Debating form a complementary programme where pupils develop essential skills in diplomacy, critical thinking, and leadership. Through participation in these activities, St Leonards pupils join a worldwide forum to address key topics such as climate change, global health, and human rights. These transformative experiences not only enhance public speaking and analytical abilities but also foster lifelong international connections, preparing pupils to become tomorrow’s leaders.

An Immersive Experience

At St Leonards, we take pride in offering an immersive experience through Model United Nations /Debating. Pupils engage with others from across the world, building the skills needed to participate in international debates and make meaningful contributions to global issues.

MUN and Debating foster:

  • Critical Thinking: Pupils analyse complex global challenges from diverse perspectives, collaborating with peers to broaden their understanding.
  • Public Speaking: Pupils gain confidence in articulating ideas on stage, honing communication skills that prepare them for future leadership roles.
  • Leadership: Pupils take on key leadership roles, learning to navigate global challenges and form lasting connections that extend beyond the classroom.
  • Community and Collaboration: Pupils from different year groups connect, fostering unity and teamwork. Participation in both MUN and Debating strengthens the school community, encourages mentorship, and enriches the learning experience.

Vanessa Samuel

“For young people to be so interested in global issues is inspiring, as they become the next generation to take on the world!” says Vanessa, a key advocate for international awareness and engagement at St Leonards School.

At the heart of the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum lies a strong commitment to fostering international mindedness. Through the Model United Nations programme, pupils not only gain a deeper understanding of global issues but also develop critical skills such as diplomacy, public speaking, and collaboration. This experience helps pupils recognise their shared responsibility for the planet and reinforces the IB’s goal of creating a better, more peaceful world.

The Model United Nations programme at St Leonards gives pupils the opportunity to step into the roles of world leaders, build cultural understanding, and develop a global perspective that they can carry into the future.

Rome 2025

From 5 to 9 February, MUN embarked on an incredible five-day visit to Rome, exploring the rich history of the Eternal City and attending the Change the World Model United Nations Conference.
At the conference, the group engaged in discussions on some of today’s most pressing global issues, collaborating with delegates from around the world. This global event hosted 600 students, making the achievements of pupils even more remarkable!

“I had the amazing opportunity to attend an MUN conference in Rome as Spain in the UNHCR committee. I debated refugee policy, drafted resolutions, and worked on my diplomacy and public speaking. After three intense days, I was honoured to receive the Delegate’s Award. Exploring Rome made the whole experience unforgettable.”
Cecily, Year 10

“The 2025 MUN conference in Rome was an incredible experience. Our focus was solving world hunger and food poverty, and it was amazing to work with delegates from around the world. Opening the conference at the actual UN FAO headquarters was a highlight. From debating to exploring Rome, it’s a trip I’ll never forget.”
Lana , Year 11
