Performing Arts
The Performing Arts at St Leonards is exceptional. Encompassing music and drama, both on stage and off, there is something for all pupils, of all ages, to be involved in.
Drama

St Leonards proudly presents a rich tapestry of theatrical opportunities, encompassing both curricular and co-curricular opportunities. Drama is designed to inspire and engage students at every level, from those embarking on the rigorous International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) Theatre course to enthusiasts eager to explore their passion in the after-school Drama Club.
In Drama, outstanding productions are staged throughout the year in the Junior and Senior years, performed either in the School Hall or Music School Auditorium, or in the neighbouring professional theatre – the Byre Theatre, run by the University of St Andrews.
Rehearsals are held in our dedicated drama yurts within the medieval school walls, decorated with twinkling lights and warmed by cosy wood-burning stoves.
The most talented Senior School thespians become members of the St Leonards Players, who work together with the Director of Drama to bring original scripts to life each year, taking performances to the Edinburgh Fringe including When Worlds Collide in August 2023.
On The Stage
Recent St Leonards productions have included Malcolm Sircom’s Olivia! performed by the pupils of Year 6; Enid Blyton’s The Magic Faraway Tree; all singing, all dancing musicals such as Little Shop of Horrors; and the Shakespearian classic Romeo & Juliet with a steampunk twist.
Behind The Curtains
Off stage, pupils have every opportunity to excel in costume and set design, sound, lighting and make up. Musicians can perform the scores live and students work with the Drama Department on direction and more.
Music

Music plays a huge part in life at St Leonards. It is a central focus of both the curriculum and the wider activities programme. There is an ensemble, choir or orchestra for every day of the week (and more), plus a concert for every week of the year.
In Music, everyone is encouraged to participate, and over 250 pupils take individual instrumental or vocal lessons in the Music School at St Leonards.
Opened in 1987 by HRH Princess Alexandra, the Auditorium has recently undergone an extensive refurbishment to offer the very best experience for both audience and performers.
Performances are both formal and informal, whether it’s the black tie Leavers’ Concert in May to celebrate the graduating Year 13s or our youngest musicians taking to the stage for the very first time in front of a friendly audience of parents and peers.
