St Leonards School gymnasts Melissa Alexander and Harriet Vincent won individual gold and silver medals at the Fife Schools Gymnastics Regional Heats in Glenrothes on November 25. Their Primary Level group also included Corinne Dumbreck and Eabha Lang and they all qualified to represent St Leonards at the National finals at Bell's Sports Centre in Perth next March. Gold medal winner Melissa, who is in Year 5 (P5) and silver winner Harriet In Year 7 (P7), enjoy gymnastics at St Leonards Junior School and train an additional 16 hours each a week, mainly at Dundee Gymnastics Club, known as DGC2K.Melissa’s mother, Claire, says: "The girls absolutely love their gymnastics. Melissa is modest but so pleased to have won Gold Primary Level 2 and Harriet Vincent gained a stunning silver. Amazing! A wonderful one-two!”St Leonards Director of Sport Clare Muir says: "The children at our school have six-week blocks of gymnastics from Year 1. They are taught a wide range of skills, experimenting with different types of movement, travelling, rolling, flight and building up to equipment work.“We also have a gymnastics club which runs throughout the year in activities time, led by by Liz Rolland. Liz has been working with our club gymnasts - those who attend gymnastics clubs outside school - for a number of years preparing them for competitions. We are very proud of all our gymnasts."
