JUNIORSCHOOL201516 WHAT MAKES A SCHOOL SPECIAL At St Leonards it is the family atmosphere and the friends the beautiful setting and facilities the first-rate pastoral care the enquiring curriculum and the many activities clubs and trips which enrich a childs school days. So as Headmaster of St Leonards Junior School I would like you to IMAGINEYOUR CHILD at St Leonards Junior School in the heart of an internationally recognised medieval town the historic St Leonards campus surrounded by medieval walls gardens and play grounds and in a brand new building complete with new classrooms a new School Hall and new activity areas. The Junior School is situated in its own dedicated area within the expansive and secure St Leonards campus. As well as having access to the full range of facilities that St Leonards has to offer Junior School children have their own playing fields and play areas. IMAGINEYOUR CHILD in the Early Years at St Leonards. Pupils are welcomed into their own classroom with dedicated Early Years teachers. From this secure base they start to venture out with specialist staff for Drama Music French and PE. We chose St Leonards because of its exceptional location and the rather idyllic life the children have. Its a very beautiful healthy place where they are thriving. Current parent IMAGINEYOUR CHILD moving to Year 4 and beyond. Pupils are taught in small classes by subject teachers. They therefore receive specialist input and become used to the idea of moving from classroom to classroom as the timetable demands. Science is timetabled from Year 3 with Year 6 and 7 classes using the facilities of the Senior School laboratories. Latin is introduced in Year 5. All children are also taught English Maths French Social Studies Religious Education Personal and Social Education Art Music Drama ICT and PE. The main sports are rugby swimming netball lacrosse tennis cricket athletics hockey and football. Our familys favourite event is the sandcastle competition the whole of the Junior School walk down to the beach and build sandcastles in teams a fantastic afternoon of creativity and fresh air using the local landscape to its advantage. Current parent IMAGINEYOUR CHILD playing the bagpipes in the school pipe band learning ballet mastering chess having golf coaching at the nearby St Andrews Links from the schools Director of Golf also a PGA instructor sailing Scottish Country Dancing or appearing in the school play. At lunchtimes and after school we offer a full range of co-curricular activities. These and regular trips and excursions move learning out of the classroom. Pupils in Year 7 usually have the opportunity to visit Paris to enhance their language skills and understanding of another culture. Year 6 classes spend time at a residential adventure activities camp in the Scottish Highlands. Regular charity fund raising events the highlight being the annual sponsored fun run help pupils to understand their greater role within society. IMAGINEYOUR CHILD growing as part of a much bigger world. St Leonards is very much one school close interaction exists between the Junior and Senior schools and many facilities are shared. Like their Senior School colleagues Junior School pupils are guided by the enlightening principles of the International Baccalaureate Learner Profile we aim for children to become communicators inquirers and thinkers who are balanced caring open-minded principled courageous knowledgeable and reflective. Junior School pupils receive input and guidance from Senior School teachers and students which allows a smooth transition onward. Children in the Junior School are prepared for entry to the Senior School and transition events for Year 7 pupils take place in the last few weeks of the Summer term. Theres a feeling of belonging and family environment. Driven by the empowerment of older children to work with and support the younger ones in both play and work. Current parent IMAGINEYOUR CHILD representing the school in a hockey or rugby match as young as eight years old. Regular sporting fixtures with a range of schools are a feature throughout the school year. Cricket lacrosse and tennis are also played as well as football swimming and athletics.
